I showed my first dog, a standard poodle, in July, 1969, 50 years ago, under the stands of the Indiana University football stadium in Bloomington, Indiana. Dogs have always been my passion. For the first 15 years, I had standard poodles. Then, in 1988, I got my first flat coated retriever and, I have to say, never looked back.
Although I began in conformation, I started doing obedience within about a year and got my first obedience title in 1973. There wasn't any agility or even hunt tests then. Through the late 1970's and early 1980's, I was busy raising four sons so the dogs took a back seat for a while. However, in 1988 I got a little black bundle of fur named Phineas who was soon to become one of the top flat coats in the country. By the 1990's I was doing Conformation, Obedience, and Hunt Tests and by 2000, running agility. Today, the flat coats of Blacfriar Kennels are multi-talented with multiple titles on both ends of their names!
I have never produced many puppies, usually, on average, about a litter and a half a year. My goal is to produce the very best puppies for conformation and performance that can be produced. And I work with each dog that I keep as a member of my breeding pool to maximize that dog's potential. The result can be seen in the pages of this site!
